Food Production Systems

Perennial Agriculture
Perennial agriculture is the highest yielding low impact method of food production available.  A highly ecological approach to food production can be managed with minimal effort after the initial implementation, and naturally carries the resistence common in natural ecosystems.  Planning niche products maximizes space usage whilst increasing profitability of your enterprises.

Food Forest Systems

Edible food forest systems remain the most ecologically regenerative food production systems, maximizing ecological principles of connectivity, stacking, redundancy and increased outputs, all for low input and maintenance on the back of careful design.  Richard has recently designed and planted over 3 acres of Food Forest at The Panya Project, which will provide food/ medicine/ timber for hundreds of years to come.  Whether you are starting a food forest from scratch, or integrating forest ecology/ multi- cropping  into an existing orchard, Integralpermanence offers design, species consultancy, planting plans and animal/ waste systems integration.

Biological Waste Management

Most of our Human waste is washed  "Out of sight and out of mind",  yet is is either an important biological resource containing nutrients and useful substances, or is easily treated by biological/ mechanical methods and kept cycling within a system.  Water promises to be one of the biggest expenses to farming in the future, with water privatisation spreading at an alarming rate.  Carefully designing water systems is fundamental to an efficient overall system. 
Nutrient filled solid waste can be carefully directed and utilised in various biological systems, providing full nutrient cycling and higher self reliance.  Composting and soil building are perhaps amongst the greatest techniques available for regenerating our landscape, right at the top of the Scale of Permanence, (a Permaculture tool for describing how easily we can change things in our landscape with minimal input), and can save on external inputs whilst enriching the most important resource to any plant system.

Bioremediation

This is an area causing great excitement around the globe.  Mushrooms that can break down hydrcarbon spills, algae that can turn waste products to high quality foodstuffs!  Whilst still fresh and new feeling, there are a plethora of useful organisms that can be carefully introduced to systems, from Effective Micro- organisms and Compost Teas to Habitat management and pollution control.

Water Harvesting/ Storing/ Conserving Systems

Water is going to be the most pressing issue for food producers world wide sooner rather than later, in many places it already is!  Water system design, from catchment to movement and storage/ conservation is crucial to site design.  Carefully crafted earthworks to intelligent watering systems, Integralpermanence can design water Systems that maximize efficiency, utilising keyline design and landform planning.  Integrated planting designs can further improve/ utilise and safeguard any earthworks, creating systems that can last for generations with minimal maintenance.

From establishing or redesigning more cost- effective systems, to getting completely off grid, energy needs vary hugely because of aims/ resources/ geographics.  Just as important as Alternative Energy sources is the Appropriate Use of technology on a project/ site.   Integralpermanence has worked with Active and Passive Solar/ Water/ Wind/ Cycle technologies and can design systems to meet your needs.

Earthworks/ Keyline

Key to a good overall site design is the consideration of site topography.  Inteligently placed Earthworks and Keyline design are crucial for efficient water management, saving outlays, maintenance and operating costs.  Understanding of the properties and behaviour of water are fundamental to a new farm/ project development, and vital for community resilience.  Utilising tested design strategies, water management is as crucial and as important in temperate as in arid climates, offering opportunities such as new edges for production, energy creation and stoage, pest control, micro- habitat control and irrigation.

Natural Building/ Finishing

Integralpermanence has collaborated  and led Internships teaching natural Building techniques to students from all corners of the globe.  From Yurts to Sand Bag building, Adobe to Wattle and  Daub, Cob to Strawbale, Greenroofing to Bamboo, Natural Building is an affordable Ecological approach to meeting our needs whilst treading lightly on the earth.  A good understanding of climate/ site selection/ material properties and passive heating/ cooling allow spaces to be created that need lower external energy inputs, saving resources and capital.   Integralpermanence  offers design, advising and project management services.

Soil Care and Building

Soil is perhaps the fastest depleted resource on earth today, and most people are unaware of that, and the inherent implications.  Soil care is fundamental to ecological functions, whether you are growing annual vegetables, herbs or trying to establish a food forest.  Composting, Soil Science, Biological Teas, EM, Fungi/ Bacterial innoculation, mulched non- dig systems are the main ways Integralpermanence generates soil in a truly ecological manner.  By taking care of the soil we see greater yields, lower inputs, higher resilience to pests and diseases, and no need for chemical applications!

Integrated Animal Systems

Animals are often conventionally reared in completely unintegrated systems.  Integralpermanence takes research from SE Asia (Where Aquaculture and Integrative systems are often in place) and applies this to any livestock in any situation.  Integrated Livestock systems achieve far greater balance, resulting in less need for healthcare, lower inputs, less importing of resources and a happier and healthier stock.

Aquaculture Systems

Aquaculture has declined hugely in many regions, and inspired by more rounded models in Europe Integralpermanence conducted research in SE Asia where fully integrated systems are common and widespread.  Up to 20 X more productive than protein production on dryland, these systems represent a great investment for the future and indeed shall become necessary.  Integrated with livestock , waste and crop systems, aquaculture can play a powerful part in good overall site design.

Growing up in communities that felt so lacking in so many ways led Richard to explore various more intentional scenarios.  Intergalpermanance offers community building teaching and workshop events, suited to your needs and goals.  This is a crucial time to really learn ( and " Unlearn") ways in whichwe can live more fulfilled, healthy and productive lives with each other and the world around us.  Permaculture Design Courses are a great way to get a community focusing collaboratively with the tools and knowledge to move towards more regenerative and holistic living.  Integralpermanence can run workshop events to meet your needs, including World Cafe events.

Working closely with you to clearly articulate goals and visions, the visual design work begins only after careful consideration of a whole myriad of factors. Designing using Permaculture methodology and working with Integral Theory and other cutting edge design tools ensures holistic planning and a level of care that is often missing in widespread approaches to land/ community/ business governance. 

Most important to the quality of the design work  is a dialogue between designer and client, to allow ideas and visions to evolve together.  This ensures your satisfaction and instills a deep understanding in the inherent qualities of elements in the design, which is vital for maintainence and informs the timing of any future inteventions.

Integralpermanence offers whole or partial system designs ( Including retro- fits) anywhere in the world.  The most important aspect in such design work is not the actual elements we work with, but how we place those elements, and how they interact.  The underlying principles of regenerative design are observations based on nature, thus can be applied universally in any situation requiring design.

Consultations usually involve thorough site observation, followed by an interview to articulate goals and gather information on available resources, time management, budgeting, etc.  This is a creative process designed to ensure all ideas and visions are realised.  Planning and designing are the most important part of a process in land management or building and reduce the risk of problems and expenses further into a project.  Strong dialogue between designer and client is essential to good design.   Depending on the project in hand, consultancy can be fully "on the ground", or via the Web for longer term project management.

Integralpermanence is managed ethically by the principles of maintaining Right Livlihood.  This involves being financially sustainable in a manner than is not harmful to others, and that actually serves to make other peoples lives more rich and fulfilling, connected and simple.  It is with this in mind that consultancy fees are calculated.  Integralpermanence aims to promote ethical and regenerative practices and businesses, and is concerned with making fees affordable and excellent value for money.

Due to worldwide activity, consultancy fees are levied according to the cultural context and the perceived Eco- Social value of the project.  Within the management culture of Intergralpermnence it is considered very important that small community based projects are promoted, supported and encouraged as an effective  strategy to become more sustainable and localised.
